I purchased the Tunturi C3 as a mid-entry elliptical trainer. I wanted something more solid than what was available at Sears. Durability, quiet/smooth action, and tension adjustments were my highest priorities.

I picked up the Tunturi at Fitness Warehouse fully boxed. Believe me, the box is very heavy–I would recommend having a strong friend along for assistance.

Assembling the unit required many steps and lots of screws. Although the instructions were clear, hooking the tension wire onto the paperclip-like assembly embedded inside the metal frame required much dexterity and small-than-average fingers. Also, one should be careful to ensure the moving parts don’t land on your head, hands, or feet during assembly.

The unit has always made knocking sounds, mostly from the adjustable knobs on the front arms. When I exchanged it with another knob, I still heard the same noise. Whatsmore, it took several months for the part to be delivered from Tunturi.

The electronics are simple to operate and adequate for motivational feedback. Also, even though the machine has wheels in the front, its weight would prohibit moving the machine on a daily basis.

After about two months of use, the machine started to make a loud, metallic rubbing noise. Oddly enough, when I went to make an inquiry at Fitness Warehouse, the Tunturi demo unit made the exact same noise. This was also the case when I returned to the store a month and a half later.

A technician came out to fix the problem. Apparently, the noise is emited when the belt starts to slip on the large flywheel. It seems he’s seen this before and his solution was to apply mechanical grease on the belt and to use sandpaper to roughen the flywheel surface. The rubbing noise has disappeared (and been replaced by the sound of moving grease), but the knocking sounds remain. I will report back if the metal rubbing noise reappears.

I would be very cautious about purchasing the Tunturi C3. I bought mine in Q4 of 2002. The design is impressive, but the noises and service required suggest you may wish to consider another model.
